Glutamine is a non
essential amino acid that is synthesized from three other amino acids arginine, ornithine and proline.
Glutamine is a primarily produced in the muscles and appears to play an important part in keeping them functioning normally. Glutamine is also used by white blood cells and contributes to normal immune system function. One of glutamines most important tasks in the body is to nourish cells that line the intestine and stomach. Some sources describe glutamine as brain fuel capable of stimulating mental alertness and clear thinking - it does this by passing through the blood brain barrier where it attaches to ammonia creating glutamic acid. Glutamine is also given credit for being one of the few nutrients that boosts HGH levels which is essential for normal growth and development. Because of its protein sparing effect glutamine is used by athletes to prevent loss of muscle tissue during intense exercise and for that reason glutamine is common in most sports supplements and meal replacements.
