Histidine is a non essential amino acid for adults but may be an essential amino acid for children. Histidine is a precursor of histamine, a compound released by the immune system during an allergic reaction. Histidine is necessary for the growth and repair of tissue as well as the maintenance of the myelin sheaths that act as protection for nerve cells, the manufacture of both red and white blood cells, helps protect the body from damage caused by radiation, helps remove heavy metals from the body and in the stomach histidine is helpful in producing gastric juices. Histidine is reported to help increase or improve libido by lengthening orgasms and also more intense sexual enjoyment. Best food sources include dairy, meat, poultry and fish as well as rye, wheat and rice.
