Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA s) |

BCAA
s or Branched Chain Amino Acids are made up of essential amino
acids Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine. BCAA
s act as a natural
anabolic muscle building supplement. Branched chain amino
acids aid in decreasing
exercise induced protein degradation and/or muscle enzyme release. Components of branched chain amino acids have
indications in aiding in the recovery of damaged livers and gall
bladder diseases. It
has also been shown that BCAA
s help with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrigs Disease). During periods of
intense physical activity the
body enters a catabolic state, Supplements of BCAA
s especially leucine and its derivatives ketoisocaproate (KIC) and
hydroxymethylburyrate (HMB) may reduce protein breakdown and post
operative use of BCAA
s help reduce muscle loss. Best results are
obtained when Isoleucine is
taken in conjunction with the other BCAA
s. It is best to
maintain a balance between branch chain amino acids of 2 grams of
leucine and valine for each gram of Isoleucine.
I have also read suggested ratios of 5
grams
of leucine, 4 grams of valine and 2 grams of Isoleucine per day for
athletes primarily for bodybuilders. Best food sources of
BCAA
s include dairy, red meats, fish, cheese, eggs, chicken and protein
supplements.
