Silicon is an important mineral for firmness and strength of body tissues as well as maintenance of bones, connective tissues as in tendons and collagen. Some natural healers prescribe silicon to forestall hair loss and cure common nail problems. Some studies have shown that silicon can also enhance immune function and in particular can increase the level of immune cells that weed out toxins and infections. Because little is known at this time about silicon there is little information on the effects associated with any deficiency in humans. Although animal studies indicate decreased growth and deficient bone and tooth structure. It is theorized that silicon deficiencies may increase our chances of atherosclerosis, heart disease, osteoporosis, connective tissue problems, early signs of aging i.e. wrinkled skin etc. Little is also known about silicon toxicity at this time as well. Best food sources include whole grains, fresh vegetables, herbs such as horsetail or alfalfa or comfrey tablets. Common dosage recommendation is 1 - 3 500 mg capsules or tablets up to three times a day. Minerals are inorganic substances
that the body needs in very small
quantities. There are twenty two metallic elements in the body which
make up about 4 percent of total body weight.
