Sulfur a non metallic element is necessary
for
detoxifying the body, assisting the immune system and fighting the
effects of aging as well as age related illnesses such as arthritis. As
part of the essential amino acids methionine and non-essential amino
acid cystine and cysteine and taurine performs a number of functions in
enzyme reactions and protein synthesis. It is necessary for the
formation of collegen (connective tissue in our bodies), cellular
respiration, as it is
needed in the oxidation-reduction reactions that help the cells utilize
oxygen.
Sulfur also
present in two B Vitamins, thiamine and biotin which is important for
the maintenance of the skin, hair and nails.

Increases in serum sulfate
may explain some of the therapeutic effects of MSM, DMSO and
Glucosamine sulfate. Organic sulfur as SAA s can be used to
increase synthesis of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), Glutathione (GSG),
Taurine and N-acetylcysteine (NAC).
MSM may be effective for
the treatment of allergy, pain syndromes, athletic injuries and bladder
disorders. Other sulfur compounds such as SAMe, Dimethylsulfide
(DMSO), taurine, Glucosmine or Chondroitin Sulfate and reduced
gluthathione may have clinical applications in the treatment of a
number of conditions such as depression, fibromyalgia, arthritis,
interstitial cystitis, athletic injuries, congestive heart failure,
diabetes, cancer and aids.
Best food sources include
protein foods such as meats, fish, poultry, eggs, milk, legumes,
garlic, lettuce, cabbage and brussel sprouts.
Sulfur
deficiency and
toxicity has no clear indication of symptoms. In most cases
diagnosis is usually poor consumption of protein rich foods due to the
association of sulfur and amino acids.
Currently there is no RDA
for sulfur.
Sulfur in not readily
found as a supplement by itself but can be found in other supplements
such as MSM, DMSO, SAMe, etc.
Suggested
dosage of sulfur is about 850 mg/d.
Minerals are inorganic substances
that the body needs in very small
quantities. There are twenty two metallic elements in the body which
make up about 4 percent of total body weight.
Minerals are found abundantly in the soil and water of the planet and
eventually are taken in by the root systems of plants. Human beings
obtain minerals by eating the plants or by eating the animals that eat
the plants. If you eat a variety of meats and vegetables in your diet,
you can usually depend on getting a sufficiency of minerals.
The minerals in the body play a part in variety of metabolic processes
and contribute to the synthesis of such elements as glycogen, protein,
and fats.
For the best sources of minerals please
consult the USDA website.
